until you get a proper answer...

for selected areas...   the national geographic society offered if i recall  trails maps for limited areas a year or two ago..  .

the USFS.. united states forrest service also offers maps.. usually through vendors..

you might really want to put GOOGLE maps to use.. as the terrain maps available there also show trails...  sometimes you can get downloads for some areas.. so you can view them in your cell phone memory... or data device with memory..

this is some text from an email i got a while back

National Geographic Maps continues to expand its popular Trails Illustrated map offerings with the release of four new maps for southern California, including Los Padres National Forest — East, Los Padres National Forest — West, Big Sur/Ventana Wilderness, and Angeles National Forest. These waterproof, trail-resistant maps offer detailed topography and current information for the region, and were researched and developed in cooperation with local land managers and agencies. Each map contains easy-to-read trails, a detailed road network, campgrounds, scenic points of interest, and important facilities.

Additional new releases include Trails Illustrated maps for Vermont's Mount Mansfield and Stowe and Michigan's Huron and Manistee National Forests. In the coming months, National Geographic will also release maps for Canada's Banff and Jasper National Parks; Florida's Ten Thousand Islands; Oregon's Bend and Smith Rock, Mount Hood Wilderness, and Mount Jefferson/Mount Washington Wilderness; Utah's Capitol Reef National Park; and more.

"Some would say the sole purpose of a map is to keep one from getting lost, but a map should also teach you something about the area that you might not have known otherwise, whether it is discovering the amount of roadless wilderness areas near Los Angeles, California, or the sheer size of Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta. Our new Trails Illustrated maps are guaranteed to do both," notes David Lambert, Manager of Cartographic Production at National Geographic Maps.

i have always thought about a pair of fishing poles with BIG reels.. and a small weather balloon to let a cell phone camera float above and look around with...  and be able to crank it back down. to view the surrounding area...   a wireless nanny cam and 12 volt monitor might do the same thing..

only draw back. the price of helium.. and helium is running out.. so it might be back to that old explosive friend..  hydrogen..  or a robotic plane or mini helo with an onboard camera..

Thank you very much for the information.  It is very helpful.  One of the things I am looking for is I have not idea of where to do.  What towns are around.  What maps.  I've spent many years four-wheeling the trails in Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska but when it comes to the east coast I have no clue what area the trails are even in.  Your info should be very helpful and I appreciate your response.  Joe
