Hi All,

I've been reading numerous threads here while trying to figure out why my 2009 Jeep Wrangler was burning a large amount of oil with only 70,000 KM.

With the help of some advice here I went to Jeep and they started an oil consumption report. After about 5000 KM my Wrangler was recorded as burning approx 1 ml per KM (so 1 L per 1000 KM). While in the oil consumption monitoring I did ask about a compression test to speed up the process and was told that if I had a compression issue I would know it so they did not want to do it.

My dealership said they would fix the issue and today I was told they are putting in a new block and re machining the cylinders (I think that's what they said). I'll try to get more info to share here.

I do think there was a legit problem with some Jeep engines as my dealer has done a few with the same issue. If anyone wants more info feel free to message or email me...adiren81@yahoo.ca

Thanks again guys for all your contributions here. It helped me alot.

oil consumption issues can be caused by IMPROPERLY CALIBRATED PCV valves..

just curious.. Did anybody change your PCV valve???

if it flows TOO MUCH.. it will pull excess oil vapors into the intake and cause oil consumption at about 400 miles per quart...

there have been a LOT of issues with chrysler built engines and oil consumption issues...

could also be the OIL control rings have seized  or have lost their designed in LOW tension..  that would be a manufacturers issue... but if your engine overheated or lack of oil changes..

i worked in an engine rebuilder back in the early 90s.. there was one ford FE motor that kept coming back.. it was rebuilt under warrantee 3 times at our shop.. twice at a previous rebuilder who refused any more warrantee work...  when i found out what was going on.. i ask to see the truck complete...  it was clean enough to eat off of under the hood..  i ask when did the problem happen.. after the first major tune up.. i ask if that included the PCV  valve..  yes.. did that get changed again during all the warrantee rebuilds???  nope..  i send him to ford.. for a PCV valve in a ford or a motor craft box.. said.. don't accept it unless its in one of those..

he came back about a month later and said oil consumption was ZERO..

seems in the early 90s.. companies selling PCV parts started boxing parts by SHAPE.. not flow rate..  this reduced the amount of part numbers  significantly..  but caused all kinds of problems..

there used to be a PCV flow tester.. that fit over the breather opening and the inwards flow measured at idle..  if the flow is too great.. oil consumption issue.. not enough flow.. oil vapors are blown out the breather...

since PCV flow testers are not made and only a few people have a flow meter to test...

i have used a fuel pump tester /vacuum gauge on the engine oil dipstick tube to measure crankcase pressure/vacuum.. see if it stays close to ZER()..  as it should...

this is the gauge i am talking about   30 inches of vacuum..   15 pounds of pressure..

i also block the vent hose with it idling.. and see if the system builds vacuum in the crankcase...

Thanks for the advise. I asked about this when I picked her up. They said it was checked and it was fine.

I picked up my Jeep after about 2 days. The service rep said that a brand new short block was put in and the top was clean and news seals etc replaced. The Jeep seems to be running fine but it 'feels' different then before which I guess isn't a bad thing considering it was burning a ton of oil before.

My question to you guys is what is your opinion on life after a engine repair like this one. Can i expect smooth sailing? I'm debating on whether or not to keep it as I can still get a good trade in amount now. I do LOVE my Jeep but don't want to be in and out of the garage with repairs...

What are some of your experiences with new engines?

Thanks.

does it run better.. or worse??

take a look at the block. does it seem new...

take a look at the PCV valve. its plugged into the center of one of the valve covers..

did they give you an itemized receipt??? that showed engine short block replacement.

Sounds like you have had a good experience so far with this dealership.  What is their name and number and who is your rep?  I might have some work needed to be done in the future.

are you using synthetic? i was, castrol syntec. burned about 1 quart every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. went back to regular castrol 5w-20. about 1/4 quart every 4,500 miles. still too much in my book. but better. just an observation. dad was a hot rodder. got my license in '74. i was a hot rodder, still am. i move at 75 to 85 mph. hate the dum-dums in the left lane doing 5 less than the speed limit. love to push that lil 3.8, just gotta remember the lag between the throttle and the computer. lots of commuter miles. so, in your case, is it heavy foot?

Aloha,
I have a similar issue with increased oil consumption on my 2007JK.  Came looking for sage advice on JP's forum and read thru some older postings. I'm going to try changing out the PCV as well as the cumbustion chamber cleaner as suggested by Mr. Cappa (2010 post/thread).

Wow, seems like there are more than a few JK oil burners out there. I am one on you. I have two 2008 JK Jeeps. A 4 door unlimited Sahara and a 2 door Sahara. Both have been one to two quarts low at oil change time. They both have under 60,000 miles and are daily drivers. I will roll the dice and replace the PVC valves and see what happens.

I have 3 2007 JK Wranglers with over 150,000 miles each.  All of them the two door models with automatics.  Two of them are red and one is green.  I put in conventional oil but have to take out a quart per 1000 miles (comes out Mobil 1 synthetic) that the engines create.  I use the extra oil in my truck and sell the rest to my neighbor.  I just have to change the oil filter every 3000 miles.  All three of them started doing this around 20,000 miles.  You cannot imagine how pleased I am.
