Hey guys I need some support.
The engine is in the CJ7, all parts are in place. I used the hesco kit and now the alternator isn't charging?
Does anybody there have similar problems, is there a part missing? Or did I have a mental error and cannot find the solution.
Thanks
Frank

Are you using the factory 4.0L ECU? And you have a ground strap from the engine block to the chassis in addition to from the battery to the engine block, right?

Hello Christian,

yes 4.0L factory ECU, I have a ground strap from the frame to the engine block,
and from the battery to the tub and from battery to engine block.
And the Blue cable from pin #20 goes to the alternator, but isn't switching.
Where am I wrong?
Thanks

You have the 4.0L alternator, right? It regulated through the ECU. Couple possibilities, the first of which could be that you've got a bad alternator. Take it to Autozone or some other store and have it tested. If the alternator comes back okay, then chances are the wiring harness possibly has some pins that are out of place. I had that happen with a harness once - two wires were swapped to the wrong pin connectors and the vehicle wouldn't start. Wasn't a HESCO harness, but they're all assembled by humans and humans make mistakes. Finally, it could be the ECU. That's be worst-case scenario, but depending on which vehicle the ECU is from, you may be able to borrow an ECU from a buddy's Jeep or find a cheap one in the junkyard. Nice thing about XJs (if that's where the computer is from) is that they're all over the boneyard.

The Alternator is okay, we put 12V to the D+ and the thing was charging.
The error comes from the ECU wire in Blue, it does not give a inital voltage to the alternator, so that he knows, he has to charge.
Knowing this we put an external switch inbetween, so not to be worried about the ECU, it was brand new from Hesco, not a xj.
Every thing worked, great driving and a fantastic performance compared to the old 258.
But after a longer trip, I saw the gauge at 16V...After another "electic worker" session, it seams that the battery is charged, but all the time at max!!
The switch does not work correct, it should stop charging the Battery at a certain level, 14,5V eg.
We have another weekend to work on the CJ.
Thanks a lot guys!

It is done!
Everything is in place and its running, and charging.
We hooked a external regulator to the alternator.
The CJ is running great. Better than new
I would do it again!
