I just bought a 1997 Grand Cherokee 4.0/42re auto. The trans front seal is shot and I am thinking the rest of the trans may be bad also. I have two AW4 trans from XJ's and am wondering about swapping one into the Grand.

I think you are better off just replacing the front seal and or putting in another 42RE.

The same thought occurred to me. Can you be more specific about why this wouldn't work? The rest of the drivetrain is the same as the xj, isn't it?

It can be done, and has been done in earlier Jeeps, but you need to know the electrical connections to make and you need the TCM for the AW4. Then you need to alter the driveshaft lenght (front and rear) and the shifter console when you are done. Not really a cost effective swap. Plus your Jeep is OBDII so it may not work at all.
