My CJ Ignigtion Problem.

So I went to charge the battery in my 1983 Jeep CJ-7, when I attached the charger the first time I wasn't thinking and put the charger on with my battery cables still attached, so when I came back the next day my battery was still dead. So I took off my cables then put the charger on.  So tonight I took the charger off and put on one cable, then as I was attaching the second it started sparking and and the ignition started turning over, even though there was no key in it.  So now when I attach the second cable the engine turns over and starts, but then it keeps trying to turn over and makes that noise we've all heard when you try to start a car that's already running.  I don't know if the ignition is stuck or if the ignition module has just shorted out.  Anyone dealt with this problem before?  Or any suggestions?

Try the solenoid.  Disconnect the higher gauge wires (thinner ones) from the solenoid and see if still does the same thing, after you reconnect the battery.  If it does, then disconnect the larger battery cables from the solenoid and rehook up the cables to the battery.  It's quite possible that the solenoid is stuck.  Sometimes tapping the solenoid with a hammer will release it.  It would probably be your cheapest fix, assuming it works.
