hey guys, with the christmas money i got i am planning to get a nicey nice exhaust system. i know borla is top of the line and will sound good. i wanted to know if anyone had any objections or suggestions for another brand. also a full system may come later down the road, a few years but before any muffler will rust out. its a 1997 jeep grand cherokee ZJ w/ a 5.2L.

Any of the stainless exhaust systems are good for your area.

ic ic, i figured that, i was just wondering about sound really, why is borla so much more expensive say that gibson, is it a performance thing? or is it better crafted? i know dynomax and flowmaster arent always SS, butwould their SS products be the same as Borla....i really think borla is what i am going with to.... is it just a preference thing?

I have Borla on my Cherokee and I like it. Sound is good and have not had any problems yet. I chose the system because it was about $100 less than Banks (the difference in the pricing is because of the separate purchase of the reducer). However, after more research, I would probably spend the extra money and get the Banks system. The reducer is a flange bolt-on design rather than the slip joint on the Borla. Now, there is some speculation here as to whether the slip joint is better. Flange bolts have the added risk of burning the flange gasket, whereas the slip joint has none. The slip joint does not seal as tight as the flange bolt design.
Given this and the metal gaskets available, I would opt for the Banks system. I guess this is because I have always used headers with flange bolt muffler adapters without any problems.
Both systems have seemed to eliminate the weak point in the reducer. Both sound about the same. If you are looking for stainless cat back system, then I would go with the one from 4 Wheel Drive. It is an excellent system. This is where the sound is defined.
Hope this helps.

Flowmaster has a offroad muffler I'd get that, It's made from diamondplate.

when my stock headers cracked, I went with a Gibson headers and cat-back system and, quite frankly, it's awesome. I'm really shocked that the only names anyone ever considers are Borla, Banks, or Flowmaster. I have one MEAN sounding Jeep, but that's beside the point. I went looking for a exhaust system that improved the performance of the Jeep off-road. The Gibson doesn't do much for immediate street performance, but off-road, it really improves the low-end torque. also, I notice that my engine runs a bit cooler in the summer heat with this system, than when I had it stock. just my two cents.

It's muffler only, you don't need a tailpipe. Most "systems" use the same size tail pipe as stock anyways, just get a muffler and a tip....my Dynomax catback was just like the factory tail pipe.
