Computer Problems

I have a 95 Cherokee that recently fried a computer.  I was wondering if anyone knows whether this is upgradeable.  I was thinking about putting in a CPU from a 97 or later because it is programable.  I also ran across a CPU for a police model.  Does anyone know about this computer?

Let me know.

It doesn't make any differance what type CPU that you use if you dont figure out why the origonal one toasted. You may keep having the same problem. I would try a stock junkyard one for a while to see if it goes out before spend money on somthing expensive.

after you figure out what went wrong, I'd stick with your origional year brain- the obdII is a pain.

I wouold stick with the original ECU, but I would like something programmable.  I am going to run a diagnostic on it.  I think the alternator had something to do with it.  Will see once I put it in the shop.  I am well aware that I could keep blowing the ECU until I figure the source of the problem.  I am interested in a progammable ECU which are available in the later years, however, can I use the same wire harness from the '95?  This is the answer I am looking for.  Is the wiring the same on the '95 as in the '96/'97?

Let me know.

it might not be, don't quote me on theis, but 96/97 is OBDII compliant, the wiring may be different because of that, especially if they redid the jeep.  i forget when those got a facelift but it those were the years you might run into a wiring problem.

also i heard around, dunno if its true, that if you plan on changing that, u have to change the whole thing over to OBDII.  this one i am not sure about.

there are a lot of different parameters programed into the OBDII ECU. as well as 2 O2 sensors. Why not look into getting a chip for your '95?

i agree, i checked with my head technician, he said its not possible to change over from one computer to the next, the harnesses are different, the wiring is different and the OBDII is noncompatible, so a chip would definately be a good idea

I had a Jet chip, a stage I.  I think it may be the reason I blew the computer.  I will not really know untill I run the diagnostic.  That is once I get back to Louisana in about a month.  Too bad JET does not make a stage II chip for the '95 Cherokee.

Thanks all the same.
