Anyone know the proper wheel backspacing for a 98 TJ wrangler with a 4 " lift and 15x10 wheels. Is 3.5 about right?

I'd go with 4 or 4.5 so you clear the lower control arms......
96 grand,3.5 Tuff Country,3/4 spacers,rusty's trackbar and mount,dual stabilizers,JCR rock sliders, Dynomax catback etc etc. www.coreoffroad.freeforums.org

4 or 4 1/2 is correct, however your logic is wrong....more back spacing will bring wheels CLOSER to lower control arms. If you are having problem with hitting control arms the 3" would be better, yet with the 3" the tires might hitt the wheel well lip, due to tire sticking out more.
