Newbie Wrangler questions

I have a 2000 Wrangler Sport with a 4.0l/auto trans/dana 30&35 diffs/31.5x10.5x15 firestones.

I've had it about 3 months now and I would like to make a few "changes" so I can really call it my own.

This is my first Jeep and also my daily driver so suburban/highway drivability is important as is low down time.

Most upgrades will have to take place over a weekend.  Unfortunately I don't have the time to do much offroading.

Three or four times a year of mild to moderate trail riding is all.

My first upgrade will be front and rear tube bumpers and nerf bars.  My second upgrade is what has prompted me to write and ask for advise.

I am leary of any kind of lift, even the 2" ones, mainly because of a lot of forum postings regarding linkage problems, u-joint problems, etc... and the need to buy and install more parts to correct the problems caused by the lift.

1: Is this something I should really be concerned with when looking at 2" spring lifts?

2: What are some of the things that might need attention after the lift?

3: What are some parts that I will need that aren't included in the kits?

4: What about axle spacers?  Are they safe?  Will they help add to the stability of my ride due to increased width?  They seem like an inexpensive and usefull upgrade if they work like the ads claim.

One more question - I promise.

5: With a 2" lift are new, longer shocks required?  What is the benefit of replacing the factory shocks with a quality aftermarket replacement like RS5000 or RS9000's even on a non lifted vehicle?

Please feel free to point me to web sites or forums that will help me answer my own questions.

welcome aboard. As a newbie myself, I fell for the trim put on  my new X at the dealer. While the tube mopar bumpers look cool I guess, they are not thick enough for any real protection, being of .090 tubing. A friend with an old cj tells me to load up the tube with grout to solidify it, but I'm not buying. Get a real set of bumpers, at least .125 thick. Same with the "nerf" bars. The pretty chrome ones with the molded step, thin walls are going to leave you open for damage, as they will just fold up against the body when you hit something. Don't go cheap. As far as the spacers, they aren't needed with your tires, only adding to your track width for interference in the tight stuff in woods. From what I understand, 3" and under won't cause any major troubles and will allow for bigger tires, but then your weak axles are exposed if you encounter any ruff stuff. groo knows best

Oh, the upward curvature of the tube also restricts installation of any towhooks to the bumper mounts. cheese

first you really need to find a size of tire you really want to run.i take it you wont really go over 33's because of the 2 inch lift.you could do a true 2 inch suspension lift and the kit comes with everything you would need, shocks, new coils,t-case drop if needed.on top of that you could put a 1.25 jks body lift and clear 33's real easy.and with having an auto theres less to do,only have to drop the radiator and transfer case lever bracket for the body lift.but first you should loof on your axel diffs and find out what gear ratio you have?if you have 3.07,you will need to regear with anything bigger than your current 31's.and wheel spacers are safe depending on which company you buy from, but for the price of them alot of guys have foud its cheaper to buy the black steel rims with a better offset, which is alot better than spacers.and like the other guy said, tube bumpers are junk, only for looks, they are made with a step above exhaust pipe.if you really wan bumper protection get them made out of 3/16 metal, and the nerfs will be dented and done the first time you go over some decent sized rocks,im not saying you have bad ideas, just trying to save you money the first time instead of finding this out as you go and replacing parts.but as a person who has an auto like you do,the first thing i would do is put in an aux tranny cooler, the trannys need as much cooling as possible going slow at trail speed.good luck with you mods and enjoy your jeep.

I agree with the above post...don't get nerf bars, they decrease ground clearance and will dent and hang up your jeep if you high center it. If you want them for the look, consider getting something like American Expidition Vehicles rocker guards, or the ones made by Poison Spyder customs(with the slider bar). Going with a rocker guard won't reduce clearance, and will actually strengthen your jeep.
As for the 2 inch spring lift, you really shouldn't notice too much of a difference in ride, handling, etc. Driveshaft angle won't be an issue with a lift this mild. You won't need longer shocks, although you could install them at a later time to get some more wheel travel. Steering shouldn't be affected at all.

don't do axle spacer, they (and wheels that naturaly stick out wide) realy chew up the narrow unit bearing hubs used on TJ. you will soon have a nice growling noise and need to spend $300 plus labor to fix it

dont wory about how stong the tube bumpers are. the oem bumper doesn't do anything either.

Thanks Groo (and everyone).  I have little time for wheelin' and I really can't risk serious damage to my daily driver so I will probably go with some sort of tube bumpers and nerf bars.  Also, I'm short enough that a 2" lift with 33's will make it hard for me to get in the darn thing.
