Go into an area with moderate amount of mud...if atleast one of your front tires shoots mud back at you when you accelerate...your 4wd works.

Here's another method:
put it in 4wd and make a very tight turn on dry pavement. If 4wd is engaged, your jeep will let you know. The tires will be trying to turn at different speeds ... so you will feel it in the steering-wheel and your butt.
It isn't good to drive on dry pavement with a 'part-time' 4wd, but testing it shouldn't hurt it. No worse than playing on rocks.

oh yeah...one other way that you can test it is by putting it up on 4 jackstands...putting it in for wheel drive and then start it up...put it in drive and see if the front tires spin.
