I GOT THIS JEEP (MY 1ST) AND I LOVE IT, ITS A LOT OF WEEKEND FUN. BUT I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MY JEEP. ALL I KNOW IS THAT ITS A 1975 CJ5 IT HAS A V8. I WANNA KNOW WHAT KIND OF AXELS I HAVE? WHAT KIND OF GEARS, TRANNY ETC ETC. THIS THING HAS BEEN OWNED BY SO MANY PEOPLE, AND THERES A LOT OF AFTER MARKET STICKERS UNDER THE HOOD. I DONT KNOW IF IT HAS A LIFT OR NOT, BUT I FIT 33'S ON IT NO PROBLEM. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE 75? AND IF I DONT HAVE STOCK AXELS AND STUFF, HOW WOULD I KNOW, IS THERE A WEB SITE OR GUIDE TO FOLLOW TO LEARN WHAT I HAVE? AND IS THERE ANYWAY TO LEARN THE GEARS W/O TEARING SOMETHING UP. THANKS TO ANYONE WHO COULD SHARE A LITTLE INFORMATION WITH ME.

i don't have a cj5 but i will tell you that you almost definitely have a dana 30 front. it probably came stock with 3.73's but it could have anything in there. there may be a tag on either(both) diff cover. there should be a pair of 2 digit numbers. the large number is the number of teeth on the ring gear. the lesser value number will be teeth on the pinion. divide the small one into the big one. the only way to know for sure is to pull the cover and count the teeth. someone may have changed the gearset without taking the old tag off and replacing it, or there isn't a tag at all(which is usually the case). the method i use which is "good enough for me" is to jack up the entire rear end, rotate a tire 1 time and and count the revolutions of the driveshaft. if the tire rotates 1 time and the driveshaft rotates 3 and3/4 times. you have 3.73's. tire 1 time driveshaft 4 and1/2, probably 4.56's. it's not exact science but it should work for you. by lifting both tires off the ground you will be able to tell if you have a locker or limited slip differential, or if it's open. if both tires turn in in the same direction, you have some kind of traction device, if one turns backward as you turn the other forward, it's open.
if your leaf springs are under the axles and you can fit 33's, you probaly have a 4" lift. if the springs are on top of the axles, it's a custom spring over conversion. your engine is probably an amc 304 but someone may have shoved a sb chevy in. it's a hard question to even begin to answer because people have done so many mods to jeeps, it's really hard to say what it has under it. after all, it is an AMC(All Makes Combined)

i don't know about '75 on the rear end. it's either a dana 44 or an amc 20. the 44 is much better. my 76 cj7 had the 20, until i replaced it with a 44 out of a '74 cj5. you can tell what it is by looking at the rear diff. cover. if it's perfectly round(like a 1/2 sphere) then it's a 20. it's hard to describe what the 44 looks like. but if it's not a 20, it's probably a 44.
