What is the big deal. Use the one printed on the title. If the Jeep has a fiberglass body who knows what else has been changed.

vin locations on modified rigs very from rig to rig but there could be in 1 of 2 locationsthat are LEFTon the rig........... stamped into the side of a frame rail usualy on the left (drivers) side mid-ship or about where the axle bolts up most likley the engine has been changed so cross checking the E.I.N.(engine ID num.) unfortunatlly when you fiber tub a jeep, it removes 95% of the "stock" vin # locations on the body there should have been a "body plate" on the drivers side of the fire wall w/all the #'s that apply to the drive train, color/trim and extras. that SHOULD have been switched over when she got "tubbed" some states require these plate(s) be transfered to the new tub/body whether they apply any more to the vehicals drive train or not because it has the vin number for DEQ resons or the problem that you are having(unable to conferm vin on vehical). the other problem is if its ever (GOD FORBID!!!) stolen and striped there is no way for the pd to verifiy that its yours w/out a findable vin!!
If you look on the frame on a '74 the vin probably wont be more than 10 or 12 numbers insted of todays 17+ but look for the number you have on the title if you find one that has the same amount of numbers but not the same numbers depending on the state there may be problems and if all else fails you may just need to go down to DMV and see about getting a new vin plate for the vehical this is unfortunatly as allways w/DMV time consuming
