Hey all! I have a bunch of newb questions (everyone was a newb at some point). I just bought a 92 renegade ( I know, its fugly but got a great deal). I know its a yj but is everything yj compatible on this rig? I want to start with the flares. It looks like the rears come off and you have a standard rear fender. The fronts look like you need a new fender. What is the easiest and cheapest way to improve ride quality? This is my primary vehicle so I spend a lot of time on road. It has a 3 speed auto and 4.0 HO. How about some lower budget mods? Wheeling on a budget stinks but got reamed in a divorce last year.

not much you can do about the ride assuming your springs and shocks are good. people put yj springs on CJ to make them ride better. what tire pressure and what tires are you running. in general it'll never ride nice, it's too short.

I never looked close at a renegade, but I thought that was all plastic. even with metal, you can cut it back and make it look nice.

It rides on 29" goodyear wranglers at 33psi. I'm not looking for a cadillac ride, just a small improvement.

Lower the tire pressure, it will help on the ride quality.  As for the the mods, are you sure that you have a high output 4.0L, I thought that change came in '93.  Other than that everything else is interchangable as long as it is from a 6 cyl. motor.  If you want better info, ask more specific questions.

if you lower the tire pressure you can risk a blow out. get some good shocks to increase the ride.

you should be plenty safe at 25 psi and even 30 would help your ride.

It is in fact a 4.0 HO. Any suggestions on a good set of headers. Already has a high flow muffler, not sure what brand, pretty much straight through, might have been put together at a muffler shop. Will eventually be fitted with a snorkle so no open filter.

Headman, Borla, Banks and Omix all make headers. Pick the one you like the best. Get a good set of gas shocks and run your tires at 20 to 25 lbs of pressure. 30 to 35 lbs is for 1/2 ton pickups. Get a set of 97 or newer TJ rear flairs and cut wheel wells to fit them. Cut the front up a little and you can run 31 inch tires on the street. For trail riding install a 1-1/2" bodu lift or a 2.5" springs and your are set to go. yse it this way untill you decide what you need for the type of wheeling that you do.

Cutting metal on your Jeep sounds scary but take my word for it, once you do it you will be much happier. Been there done that.

Have fun. It's the most important thing to remember.

The plan is to eventually run 33 inch tires and do some mild to medium  off roading. I did air down to 26psi, that helped a lot. What size lift will I need to clear 33's? Don't want to be sitting on top of them with rubbing issues but also don't want to sit crazy high either.

the body can be modded to fit 33s ir you need about 4" to clear a stock body. bigger heavier tires will increase unsprung weight wich will hurt the ride some, but bigger wider tires can be air down even further.

Mild in the sense that there are little to no rocks, lots of water crossings and some moderate hills. A friend has a few hundred acers with a creek that runs down the middle. Average depth on the deepest crossing is 3 feet. He has an FJ-40 that he's had for years and recommends a snorkle from experience.

All this time and I just thought they had those snorkels installed so their SUVs could breathe higher altitude air than the rest of us!!!   After all, the last time I saw a Land Rover driving around with a snorkel I think I saw the drivers nose hairs before I saw him.  At lease he had the decency to put a "Hummer Recovery Vehicle" bumper sticker on.
