Thats a very good topic. I have a 99 TJ with a 2.5L gas engine in it. All winter I have been researching and begging my dad to let me ''rebuild my jeep''. I'll tell you what I know as of right now. You can import a 2.8L TDI with a variable geometry turbocharger on it for about 6K. That is about the smae price as a new vortec V-8. It will make 280 ft-lb at 1400 rpms. Look at the 4.8L V-8 and it will make about the same. But its important to see where its making those ft-lb's. I never really cared about horsepower, but the diesel does like 140. Spins to 4000rpm I believe. Gearing will be very import if you did it. The engine is mechanically controlled. So you need to hook up into your current ignition system, and maby make a custom gauge pod replacement. I will make mine out of aluminum. Then you need new gauges. I will try to by-pass the computer, hope fully with a few wiring diagrams everything will work fine.
Adapters are available. Advance adapters has just completed an adapter to make the back of this engine look like the back of a small block chevy. So then you can use any other chevy to blank tranny adapters. It's the 90 V pattern, there is also a 60V pattern. I will try to use the nv3550 tranny and if funds are around an atlas 2 transfer case.
Your fuel system will also need some work. Since the gauge pod will be gone you will need a new fuel gauge. Need to know how many ohms for empty and full signals. But the diesel has a lift pump to get fuel from tank to the high pressure injection pump on the engine itself. So you need a to lift pump and a return line back to the tank. The filler neck will have to be retro fitted so you can put in the diesel sized nozzel in.
Basically the simplier the better. If you want more info shoot me an e-mail and I can put you in contact with some really smart people who sell these engines and other accessories. freestylehoops@ameritech.net
