I will be buying a 1999-2001 TJ very soon, and I think I want to lift it and put on larger tires.  I know NOTHING about lifting a vehicle, and need as much information as I can get.  I have not been successful so far searching on the internet.

This jeep will be a daily driver and so I need to learn about all possible considerations this lift will have on my jeep.  I would appreciate any information on lifting a jeep, as well as where I can look up this detailed information.  Thanks.

I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 and I put a 4 inch suspension lift on mine. It is a stage 1. 4 shocks 4 springs, swaybars, all the good stuff. I did the labor myself (since i knew what i was doing) the whole thing cost me less than 700 bucks. Stay away from online cause there are sooo much stuff where it will drive you nuts. Go to a 4 wheeler parts store. If not then the only place I think of online is www.4wheelparts.com. That's where I got mine. Also my Jeep is a daily driver and my offroad toy. NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. I drive a lot. I am on the californian coast going up and down everyweek. 350 miles round trip per weekend And I have no problems. Also I have 33 inch tires on it too. People tell me that 35s wont fit on a 4 inch lift. It looks like it will but I am not sure. Stick with 33s. If you want more than 33. put a 4 inch suspension and a 2 inch body. the body lift will cost you 90 bucks. I dont like body lifts because they can wear down quickly (in a matter of a couple of years or so) If you want 35s.. go with a 6 suspension lift.

Jeepmonster,

Thanks for the info.  When you put on your lift and the 33s, did you have to make any other modifications?  I hear a lot about changing gears, adjusting the speedometer, adjusting the driveshaft, etc..

CT-

Yeah, if you want to still have use of your fifth gear, you're going to need to regear.  We have a 98 TJ with a 3" rubicon express lift and 33's; it's regeared to 4.56's.  We got lucky that it had adjustable upper control arms in the rear, so that, combined with a transfer case drop kit kept the rear driveshaft vibration to a minimum.  Also, if your jeep has a posi in the back, it won't fit with the new gears, so you'd either have to go open diff, get a new posi or locker or somthing.  I also know you have to replace the speedo gear if you want your odometer and spedometer to read right.  We had some friends at a shop do it for use, so I'm not too sure how to go about it.

Also, depending on what you're going to be doing with the vehicle, you might want to skip four wheel parts.  I'm not a big fan of most of their lift kits because they seem to be just for show.  I'd be looking at somthing like the rubicon express kits (http://www.rubiconexpress.com) or maybe Terraflex.  Just the normal 3" super flex kit will make most people stop and look when you're on the ramp.  The 3" will also clear 33s, but you'll get a little rear fender rub at full flex.

To 4wheelparts' credit, I think they do now carry rubicon experss.
