I am one of these unfortunate souls who has a '87 Wrangler with the French BA-10 tranny and associated transfer case....what tranny that is a good 4 wheeling tranny is easy to swap out so that it is more reliable? I have been told the AX-15 is pretty much bullet proof and bolts right up, is this true? What Transfer case would I want to go with that?

I wouldnt consider the ax-15 bulletproof, but its not weak either. The sickest combo would be nv4500 with an atlas. but thats out of most peoples price range, if you want to keep your axles than your t case options are limited, guessing that you need a drivers sid drop. Atlas II, np231 are all that I can think of. Cheepest rout, get an ax-15 mated to a np231 from a 87'-99' wrangler, (has to be a six),should bolt right up.

I like the five-speed NV3550 for durability (nearly a direct bolt in) more than the AX-15 but the newer NSG370 six-speed would be a sweet swap if you can find one in the junkyard. Might as well grab the NP231 t-case while you're at it.

The NV3550 came in '00-'04 4.0L Wranglers.
The NSG is in '05 4.0L Wranglers.

The NP231 is a great solution as long as you are not riding around in a 300HP monster. If you have more than 4 inches of lift get on with a SYE (the best mod I ever had done).
