My 82 CJ 258 lifters are pretty noisy, particularly when the engine is cold. I use 10w30 oil, great oil pressure, etc. Do I need to change them out? Have I already burned any valves? Any other words of wisdom? I know my next project has to be to get ride of the Carter carb...Thanks,

Jonathan I can tell you from experience that it is more likely your cam than your lifters. I have an eighty CJ-7 with a 258 and installed a comp cam and lifters. I am experiencing more valve noise than before. I took it to a fried that specializes in race motors and heads. We came to the conclusion that I needed longer pushrods. Botom line it may need more than you think. I also did away with the Carter Carb and went with the Weaber 32-36 and am very pleased with the results. Hope this helps. JC
