OK, so I'm 20, military with limited time and somewhat limited cash.  I recently purchased an '85 cj7 in great shape (my first jeep). I Swapped the 286 with a GM 350 and repalced the t-5 with the matching GM 350 3-speed auto. I've just had an adaptor (from advanced adaptors)installed to fit on the dana 300 t-case.  The body/frame is in great shape which I plan on coating both the inside of the tub and underneath. Any suggestions?  I bought it with a 2" body lift and he sits on 33"x12.5" but with limited wheel travel. I want to get somemore height but am at a loss.  Being an engineering student I'm worried about the stability if I throw on 3" suspension system with the body kit on it.  How difficult would it be to cut off the body kit and maybe add  4"-5"? Could I achieve that with new leaf springs or am I looking at some kind of coil system? I want to use it for limited off-roading at the farm but basically an every-day driver.  Everything besides the engine and drive train and exhaust is stock. Are there any problem areas I should be concerned with? I'm pretty good with a wrench but haven't done a whole lot except change oil and install bolt-on parts in an old ford truck in high school.  Any suggestions about anything would be greatly appriciated.

Next question. Now that I've installed the GM tranny and the transfer case adaptor my rear drive shaft has to be cut down to about 19 3/4".  The guy who is fabing them up is worried about the wear on my U-joints with such a steep angle. Will that be a problem? What is a CV joint? Would that work better? Any suggestions?

My brother has a 93 Wrangler with a 6" suspension lift and a 2" Body lift, and he's running 36'Super Swamper TSL's. I don't find it to be unstable when I drive it so what I think it comes down to is the way you drive it. IF you coat the tub...take it down and have it sprayed professionaly. I had my 02 wrangler done on the inside and I love it...it was expensive though...($600.00) OH and I feel your pain ...I'm Military too!!!

Body lifts do not have to be "cutoff" they are spacers that are bolted on. Also without a suspenion lift your drive shafts are stock angle right now and are fine. Do some looking around the internet for info on lifts etc, and buy and read jeep magazines, you'll learn alot. I hope I was some help to your questions.Good luck.

P.S. a better and cheaper way to go would be to to go with 32" tires instead of 33's,this would get you more clearance you want. Some new shocks would round things out as well.

The GM transmission and case are longer than the Jeep units.. at least some of the autos are, which would explain why you had to shorten the shaft, but I'd also think the front shaft would have to be lengthened or it may come apart at a serious suspention flex.

I'd certainly ditch the body lift.. the ONLY good they do is give more tire clearance.  The list of bads is long...  4-5" suspension lift of a CJ is certainly not an issue, but a quick and dirty way to get most of that is to do a spring over conversion (unless it has already been done), and taller shackles. you will want traction bars though, after that- expecially with the GM power plant, otherwise wheel hop may be an issue.

if you already got a new drive shaft i would recomend a 3" suspension an keep the 2" body lift, with a t-case lowering kit it will ride like stock (almost lol) to keep from having to buy a second driveshaft with a 5-6" kit.but if you havent got the new driveshaft yet i would definately get the 5-6" kit

hope it helped
