DOM or HREW tubing?

I have a couple of quick questions.  I am building an old 3A and putting a full cage in it.  I am planning on tying the cage into the frame and all of the seats and seat belts to the cage.  I bought a cage kit from Smittybuilt with two extra spreaders for the center.  I already have a tube to attach my shoulder belts onto.   All of these are DOM tubing.

My main question is this, "Since I am only reinforcing the cage, connecting the back and front hoops together and to make mounts for the seats, I can use the HREW tubing, correct?"

I know that it is not as strong as DOM, but I do seem to remember that a staff member of either JP or 4 Wheel and Off Road built a "truggy" out of HREW tubing.  You just have to be carefull on where you put the seam when you bend the tube, corret?  Is it on the inside or outside?

Thanks,

Oly

Sorry for the late response, but the Smitty cage is HREW. For most applications it will be just fine. However, DOM is nearly twice as strong. So if you are building a cage from scratch DOM is what I would reccomend. HREW and DOM can be welded together with a MIG, Flux-Core, or ARC welder without any problems. HREW will be fine for the seat mounts.

Our Juggy is made out of 1 3/4-inch .120-wall DOM, not HREW. When bending HREW it's a good idea to put the seam on the inside of the bend.

Thanks,

John
