I have changed out the engine in my '46 CJ-2A to a Buick 231 V6. While doing so I got this great deal on a Holley carb for the 2 barrel intake the engine had.
As I read through so many off road pages about these Holley carbs, it looks like I might have a few problems with rock crawling at steep angles. (I say "might" because I haven't drove the Jeep yet with the new engine and SM420. Still wiring it.)
My question is, are there any mods or improvements, or suggestions that will help me with making this carb work in the method I want it to?
I would like to keep the carborator, because it allows me to use a 4" tall on a 14" round air filter pan. My other two buddies can only use a 1" filter with the Edlebrocks they use. I even have an adaptor/spacer on mine and still get this huge ole filter under the hood of my flattie.
I have heard that there is a kit for "spring loaded needles and seats" that might improve things. Also heard of a "Vent Baffle" change over. Don't know of any of these and would appreciate any help. Any help will be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Sounds like you might be into your "46" pretty deep right now, as far as cash goes. You didn't say what Holley this is. I'm guessing its one of there 390-500 cfm 2 barrels, from what you said about it fitting your intake. Any way, I don't know of anyone that is real happy with there Holley carb as far as a steep climb. They are better than most, but will leave you powerless in the middle of the hill, if its a longer one. We would have problems with them even at the dragstrip, going lean on cars that run 11 sec. and under (wheels up) if you don't have the floats set dead on the money. Speaking of money, don't waist a good engine, by burning a piston, in the middle of the hill with a so so carb. Because it won't cost you anything to ask, call Holley and ask them what they think can be done with it. Be ready,
cause carbs are not always as cheap to set up as most people think. Holley would do our 1150 dbb pumpers for 200 to 400 bucks in the off seasion, depending how bad they where and ship them back by spring. Very nice work! Remember that guy, "you can pay me now, or you can pay me latter"? There is no sicker feeling than seeing that blue gray smoke cause you just put a skylight in a piston! Call Holley, the'll give you the real skinny on your carb. Sorry you do have a 4 barrel carb, just read your post again, and saw it at the end. Just coming off a 15 hour shift at work, and I'm a little punchy I guess, even a 500cfm 4 and up to 850, all samie, same. If this carb is over a 650 cfm even at this, thats a lot of carb for 231 cubes, you'll kill your engines low end grunt with to big a bucket! Call Holley, good luck.
