I have a 1972 CJ5, 232 strait six with 258 head currently finished restoring it after about a year and a half, but the problem i'm having is that when i try to start the enging it acts like its stuck in gear. So i replaced the whole clutch assy and throw out bearing, and found that i had the bell crank on the wrong way so i fixed that and adjusted the bell crank rod out almost all the way and its still doing the same thing. this is the only thing preventing me from driving it out of the garage, any ideas would help thanks.

You did not say what tranny you said you had. I had this similar problem with my t176 4 speed in my 85 cj7. I unbolted the the shift tower/cover from the trans case. I then used some big flat head screw drivers as prybars to shift the tranny back into neutral, then lined up all the shift forks (they are the wishbone looking things hanging off the shift cover) and put it back on. Somehow my forks had jumped the rings they usually ride in and the trans stayed in first. It is really easy to figure out how it works once you open it up, itseems hard to get the cover off at first but put your back into it you ain't gonna break anything delicate. Hope this helps, send me an email when you figure it out.

sorry about that , I have a T-90 transmission and model 20 transfer case . this jeep has been sitting at my dads deer camp for 2 years . how familiar are you with adjusting the clutch linkage because like i said before i have it adjusted out as for as it will go could that be screwing me up also.

I am not at all familar with that tranny, but the clutch don't matter if it is stuck in gear you should be able to return to neutral with the engine off.

with the clutch pushed in and shifter in first gear i can start the engine and the jeep lunges foward , telling me the tranny is stuck in gear. after the engine dies its a little difficult to get the shifter out of first and if i run the shifter throught all three gears its difficultlike its hitting some thing. well ill check what you told me about i hope its not nothing major.

sounds like its a cluch problem, not a tranny problem.

Is it possible that you have the throwout bearing in backwards? How about the friction plate? The lunging on engine start says that the clutch isn't releasing all the way. My first Jeep had every single piece of the clutch linkage break at one time or another, and I got good at making it work. Also speed-shifting...

pull the top off the t90 check ! I had one do the same thing IT was water got inside the transmission and rusted things really bad, you said it had been seating for awhile was it out side ? if its rusty ,you can take it apart and most of the rust will clean right off !you will need to replace the bearings they have a kit that will fix you right up
