I'm guessing it was put in there in place of the 2.5 Iron duke. I believe that might be the engine the early toyota landcruisers copied so it cant be all that bad

I believe the Iron Duke 4 banger started life as a advertising slogan in the Pontiac Astre/Chevy Vega. Was a replacement for the aluminum blocked Vega 4 which had major problems. A decent motor that spent time alot of time Jeeps too. What I am not sure of is if it's real origins came from the Chevy II/Nova 4 cyl which basically was a Chevy Six with two cyl. chopped off. That 4 banger was a great motor that didn't see too much use in the Chevy II's as it was a rarely orderd base engine really only made it into taxi's and export vehicles. That motor was great and still lives on today as a widely used Mercruiser boat engine. I think Mercruiser used it in both 153 and 181 cu. in. versions over the years. And, by the way I wouldn't be scared of the Chevy 250 it's a good motor too. Company's like Clifford make manifolds etc for it.

This was about 20 years ago. We had a 1974 Ventura. Don't remember all the specks. We built the 250 inline, I guess more or less on a bet. At one time there was a lot of after market go fast stuff for these little mills. We won the bet, the car did end up running the 1/4 m just under 15 sec. I would say that is dam stout for 250 cubes. I do remember we had a Holley 500 cfm, 6 in to 2 header, cam ????? can't remember, and some port matching on the head using the gaskets, and that was about it. Very strong engine though. Was driven every day and flogged at the strip for two years before it got sold.

I've heard the iron duke is the same engine as was used in the fiero I was guessing on that it came with the duke because I figure it would have the same belhousing on the sr4 (maybe) trany that wounld last behind a v8 but might last behind a 250

I HAD A 2.5 IRON DUKE IN AN OLD PONTIAC. THAT THING WAS DAMN NEAR INDESTRUCTIBLE.

This is a darn tuff engine. I used to circle track these in the 80's. Clifford Performance(6=8) makes all kinds of goodies for this one, check em out!
