sorry for the dumb questions-- if i stay with my d44 rear and my sounds like i have a 30 frnt (was told it was a 35c by previous owner) and i wanna run the tires i've got/it came with 35x15.50x15 super swampers what gears should i be running?
i have 4.10s now, but seems to be a bit high for the 35's - i got a used set of 33's and seemed to do alot better but i would much rather run the 35's
258 six a lil mo better than stock
t-18 stock
d20 transferr stock (but with twin sticks not that it matters)

If I was running 35's I'd drop a d44 in the front too. I haven't heard anything good about d30 fronts.

the dana 30 is a good axel, the 35c is the *** one.you can lock a 30 without breaking it.but if you have the option of getting 44's front and rear id go for it.then you would have the better manual locking hubs and could fully lock both axels with no problems at all.

how can you tell the difference between a 30 and a 35c?
he said the "c" didn't stand for c-clip but "custom" does that make a difference? or do you smell smoke?
speaking of lockers i'm not happy with the true trac thats in the rear and the front is open which would you recomend for front and rear? the less expensive of coarse - is that quik-lok a good locker? could i use it in the front axle also?
thanks for helping!

well the 30 is a front axel so the diff would be off-set to the drivers side, also has a metal drain and fill plug.the 35c is a rear and it is round with a rubber drain fill plug.
as for ratio?if your gonna run 35's,maybe bigger somday go with 4.56's.give ya plunty of power on road as well as off.

hey your right i do have a 30 !! i found a sight www.jeeptech.com man it has everything bout axles/transmissions/transfers even tells you what will interchange and ways to modifiy!!! great site for info!!!
so 4.56 would be a good gear for 35s? you think the d30 would handle the 35s?

well the magazine that holds this forum on just had somthing in it this month about that question.the only differnce between a dana 30 and dana 44 front is the size of the ring and pinion.so you would have no problems running 35's or bigger, its the 35 rear you have to watch out for.
the tranny you have is a 4 speed i think if i remember right.if it is 4.56's would be a good choich,if you do have the 5 speed, you could even think about 4.88's.but if you dont have an overdrive, you dont want the 4.88's,unless its gonna be a pure trail rig, with only minimal in town driving

What year is your Jeep? CJ to1986, YJ 1987-1995, TJ 1997-2006. And the 4.0 is not a 258, that would be the 4.2. Gearing for the 35's, 4.56 w/o overdrive, 4.88 with a overdrive. There may be some clearance problems with that low a gear in your front axle, these are some big ring gears for that little diff, Dana 30. To tell you the truth, those 35's will at some point eat your front axle alive. The Dana 35 & 35c were rear axles for the YJ &TJ. The 35 is the lesser of the two evils. The 35c has C-clips holding the axles in, if you bust a axle, you loose your wheel and tire.
