help!!
i'm seriously looking at putting rockwells under my 85 cj-7 - straight 6 bored 30 over offenhauser intake 4 bbl carb header w/ t-18 4 spd granny low(stock gears) w/ dana 20 transferr (stock gearing) currently 4" spring under w 1" body other mods: firebird brake booster danna 44 rear w/ disc- detroit true trac locker. front is 35c open diff.
with the drive train that i have- could i run rockwells?
if i could what size tires would i have to run? and what speeds would i be able (without running 40,000 rpm ) to achieve?
please one more question then i'll shut up!
do you think 4" lift springs would do ? seems like it would - i'm not putting a bigger truck on top of the springs just bigger axles under them?
thanks for any help or suggestions!!!!!!!

I would say no smaller than 42s or you really don't need the axle strength of the Rockwells. It's gonna be slow going on road with that setup. Hills will kill you and highways with downhills will rev you out. Not a good daily driver if that's what you're looking for. Around town it will be fine as long as speeds expected are less than say 40-45.

well i think i've convinced myself not to take on such an undertaking!!!
i need to get what i've got going first and enjoy it and maybe change my wife's way of thinking bout trail riding so maybe will she start asking me "when can we go riding"
besides sounds like my d44 and 30 are probably enough for the trail riding i'll be doing. maybe one day i'll upgrade to some 1ton stuff!!
thanks for the insight -- i really wouldn't want to sacrifice on road drivability!!! i want to enjoy every aspect of owning my/a jeep!!
thanks

Dang that's a shame.
I was going to suggest beg/borrow/steal the coin to get a Stak 3spd t/case with the overdrive - means the ratio isn't so useless as you approach the speed limit ![]()
