I have a 1948 CJ2A.  In the front it has a Dana 25, the rear is a 41.  Does anyone know what the 25 can handle?  Im a wheeler on a tight budget (college education aint cheap, and i still cant speel for crap) and i want to put 31" tires, can i do it without praying every time i hit the trail?  the gearing is 5.38 and the motor puts out about 110Hp and 120Ft/Lb.  thanks for any help.

in a word No....but....with that horse power and gear combo I would grease them and hit the trail. with confidence! it takes horse power and torque to snap it. a wise friend once said if you do not floor it---it will not blow! enjoy, and keep your eyes out for a  free   30 that will fit.

thanks for the input.  one more question, would it be worth it to convert to disc brakes?

no I would not spend the money on the disc. go for a 30. I know you have a classic . but if you want to upgrade the axle I think the 30 will be much wider than the old 25 so you can solve that with some offset rims. if the back is a 44 use some wheel spacers to make it all look right.

I have a 46 2A the disc convertion was real cheep!!! & the best mod I've made.  I ran 36" IROC's for about 6 months before breaking the short 25 shaft(probly due to the welded diff & the added ponies of the 4.3)

The Dana 30 will bolt right in, but the draglink might be a problem. I skiped the 30 & shorten a 44.  I uesd heim joints & made my own tierod & draglink.

The wheelin we do is mainly mud, hills & some rock. With 31's & the stock L head I'd do the disc convertion & hit the trail.

this is what I used for my disc job

good luck
