Hey guys i am new to this. But my first question i am seeking help to answering is about building a custom roll cage. I have a 79 CJ7 and i am looking to expand on the roll bar... any suggestions? materials.... thickness...guage... welding techniques....

 

i think its 1 5/8 DOM tubing like they use on race cars. thats what i'd use. You're going to need a good bender and some material to make a template out of. basically make your template and bend it into shape. Are you tying this into the frame or are you going to weld it to the floor. the best way to go is tig welding, but if it's not available and you are unsure of you rwelding skills MIG welding is the way to go. You are also going to need a tubing notcher.

I think i am gonna weld it to the floor or bolt it down as seen at poisonspyder.com, i think mig welding is available but i am not 100% sure because i am using a local universities tools as of right now.  where can i learn more about these tools? such as the tubing notcher and... you know of any places on where i could find good plans?

ok try www.eastwood.com they sell every fab tool known to man. basically start measuring and make templates out of something cheap that you can follow while making your bends. i'll sketch something up and post here for you on how i might plan it out
