I think you'll wear it out quick because it wont be oiled. I believe the old piston compressors have a sperate oil resivior, the more modern rotory compressors use the oil in the refridgerant. or at least thats what I've heard... you'll want some sort of presure cut out switch in line with the "power" switch that engages the clutch. you should have some sort of filter, maybe to the airbax, on the inlet (low side) and a tank with a chuck on the high side

Not sure what you mean by no oil? What type of compressor do you have a Sanden (small round one) or a York (big square one)?
The problem with most AC York AC compresors is that they have a low volume head on them. The york I have has a 10CFM head and it's awesome for air tools and inflating tires. Most AC compressors run a 4 or 6 CFM head.

it's my understanding that once you disconnect an a/c compressor from the actual a/c system ... you loose the oil that get's circulated with the freon. they'll last a while, but unless you figure out a way to replace the oil ... it's just a matter of time until failure. Pete

You're right, the compressor needs oil to survive. My Jeep has a GM 350 TBI engine swapped in, and has on board air using the GM factory AC compressor. I added a capped tee in the compressor suction line. Every few times I use the compressor, I add a little oil into the tee, and it is holding up fine for several years now. The oil does build up in the air tank, so it needs to be drained occasionally.

No problem. Mine is topless, no AC. Just a tarp on top of the cage for shade. I actually used a tee from one of those Prestone coolant flush kits. It works nice because of the cap for the tee, but a regular plumbing tee would work too.

Mine has been working fine. You just have to get the oil back to the pump. I installed an air drier, after the pump to pull the oil out of the air before the tank. then plum a return line from the drain on the drier back to the air intake, then cap the whole thing with a rocker cover breather. Change the compresser oil when you chang your engine oil. I have a 7 gallon tank. and drain the oil back every 3rd tank. This has been working fine for 2 years, and all the parts are from Home Depot. About $150.00 covered all the stuff. tank, hose, switchs, and wires. It will do an easy 120 psi. Have gone to the tanks limit of 180 psi, a few times. Its pretty darn quick too.

Nugget, If youy have a Sanden then you don't have an oil loss issue. The sanden has separate operating oil form the AC oil system. A York utilizes the oil of the AC system to lube it's internals. With my york I simply run a line from an Air/oil seperator back to the fill on the york. My oil is constantly being refilled and filtered.
