In the times now emissions are quite strict. Well the state im registered in i dont need em' and i wanna get rid of them. I'm looking for some information on what i can eliminate and still allow my 258ci w/ 168,000 miles on it which still maintains stock compression to run like a champ all these vaccum lines are rather taxing on the mind if you dont need them , more stuff to go wrong as far as i am concerned mind you in still living in the age of carbs.. but if anyone can throw me some info on this subject i would be happy to have it now that ive gone from stock to ready to run the trails when i want.. thanks to all who respond.. hey JP techs dont be afraid to send some helpful hints about my YJ my way.

I don't know if this helps any ... but there is a difference between necessary and emissions testing.
obviously if your state requires testing ... you'll need the emissions stuff.
If they don't test ... you can still get busted for not having it.
I may be wrong, but then ... I may not.
My 2 cents.

Pete's right, as in a lot of states, you don't test the stuff , as in N.Y. for 1995 and older, but it all has to be there, and hooked up. Or you won't pass state inspection. Maybe your state has other laws, you may want to check with a few shops around your home town and get the real skinny on it before you start chuck'n stuff in the in the trash. If your state OKs this, theres more to it than pulling vac. lines. That carb. needs those vac. lines, to feed info to your comp. wich in turn tells the elec. meetering rods in your carb where they should be set. Its an ugly system, but needed with your Carter carb. The carb. will have to swapped out. Don't know for sure but they are older Ford carbs that will interchange, or a Weber, a small say 390 cfm Holley. Once you get that far, you will have to make mods to that Duraspark ign. also. That tied into the comp. also. I ended up installing a Howell fuel injection set up on my 1990 YJ, and at that had to prove to New York states sniffer that it runs as clean or cleaner than the factory set up before it would pass, wasn't a problem passed with room to spare! So now my YJ is on a list along with other people in NY that have mod. fuel systems, from fuelinjection to Farmer Ted that is burning a mix of corn oil and cow crap. Check your laws, then check your wallet!!! Good luck!

Your 83 runs fine with out it because pre 1986 is a differant set up that the 86 CJ, and 88-90 YJ. 258, Be a guy and see if your carb still has the ID. tag on it and send to him, so he knows what carb to look for. 1986 and newer should be the same set up as Calif. had for 1985 and older, back to 1980 or 1979 I think. Don't get me wrong, it will run, in the factory pre set rich mode, or "limp home" as its also called, wich is what its more than likely doing right now because something in the system has failed.
