It should not take more than a light pull to get it in 4-HI. My advice is to find someone who has owned their Wrangler for awhile and have them try and engage yours. Let them tell you if what you are feeling is normal.

If not your vehicle should still be under warranty, take it back to the dealer. If not under warranty, then you need to try and determine wether or not your linkage is binding.

The 231 is a shift-on-the-fly transfer case. You can shift it while moving. Check your manual for the details. Mine has a manual transmission in front of it so if I'm not moving I try and ease it forward a little while moving the shifter. It seems to work but don't try it when going in and out of low range. It'll grind everytime.

I had a problem with my 02 Sport. I bought it used from someone who didn't bother reading up on it. Anyhow, I had a problem with the transfer case poping out of 4hi. Looked underneath and saw that the push rod for the shifter was bent over and wasn't fully engaging 4hi. This is a result, I believe, of the former owner trying to shift to 4wd while the front and rear axles were spinning at different speeds, ie. they were stuck. I believe this also could be attributed to someone trying to shift to 4lo w/o being in neutral. The lesson is, if it wont go, don't try to force it; there's somthing wrong. Also, check your rig out before you go offroad, DUH!
