I took out MY personal preference and ONLY applied what sets Jeep out from the crowd. AND THAT IS its ability to go off road remember the term "TRAIL RATED?"
Now I can't help to think that the best STOCK jeep is a Rubicon. I mean dana 44s lockers taller stance.
Okay we are on the JP FORUM so i hope we are primarily looking at the best 4 wheeling Jeep. and yes the grand did win but it won on this like smooth ride comfort accelerating etc. What about it's crawl ratio?
Can a stock WJ go everywhere a stock Rubi can? Answer this and you have the answer.
What is Jeeps heritage?

Heritage is a good point. The Willys MB earned the nickname 'Jeep' by the soldiers in WWII, because it could go anywhere and was so nimble, simple, durable, and basic. Any Jeeper knows this.
They will never be that simple again, but I guess the Rubi does come the closest to living up to the heritage.

I assume you are referring to the 4 wheeler of the year 2002. It should've won dude, it was up against these 8 other vehicles; Chevrolet Avalanche, the Ford Explorer, the Dodge Ram 1500, the Isuzu Axiom, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, the Jeep Liberty, the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Longbed, the Nissan Xterra, and the Suzuki XL-7
Here is what it was tested on, some of which is offroad lots that isn't. I would hope a jeep would beat out a suzuki xl-7 etc.

When I heard that Daimler bought JEEP I thought to myself, well , there goes another American tradition to the trash heap. Seems like I was wrong (the Liberty notwithstanding). Test drove a Rubicon yesterday and WOW, what an awesome vehicle! Now, if they would only build nthe pickup I would consider learning to speak German!

auto5man said: "...which stock or almost stock jeep would you choose for its off road ability keeping in mind it would be your daily driver and highway speeds would be a daily part of driving." To me it sounds like he wants off-roadability first, street comfort 2nd. With the prerequisite that it has to be stock, or near stock, I think a Rubi with a mild susp lift (2.5") would be the way to go, esp with the hardtop if you live where it gets really cold. I don't really think there is an all-around best jeep, it really depends on what you need. Lets say you need a daily driver that you can 'froad on the weekend. Ok, well, to you, what is offroading? A ZJ or WJ is a formidable offroad machine, and can probably handle 90% of whatever you throw at it. If so, than that's probably your best jeep. However, a Rubi is even more capable off road, and is a perfectly decent daily driver in stock form. It also has tougher drivetrain parts, so would theoretically break less. Then again, if you've got the *** what about customs like the AEV Brute? Does that count as stock? Plus there are all sorts of other variables, like aesthetics. The perfect Jeep is the one that - does all that you want it to
- does nothing you don't want it to.

the bottom line is there is no arguement what the best 4x4 of all time is. it got 4x4 of the year it is the Rubicon. i would go with an 06 rubi with a 6 speed tranny. this vehicle WILL out do any stock vehicle when it comes to 4x4 versitility. NO questions asked the rubicon out does any stock vehicle ever made.
