TJ Scrambler Project

Here's a project I'm thinking about doing: since the Wrangler Unlimited has basically the same wheelbase as the old Scrambler, take an Unlimited, stretch the bed behind the rear wheels about 11" to make it the same length as a Scrambler.

I think lengthening the bed can be done with some replacement CJ-8 rear quarter panels, lengthening the bed floor (not sure what with yet), lenthening frame rails, tailpipe and taillight wiring.

I would use an Alaskan Postal World Cab steel hardtop and rear swinging door (I happen to have one sitting in my garage).  The hardtop roof over the doors would need to be shortened about 1-2" as necessary at the first roof joint to accomodate the higher rake angle of the TJ windshield. This shouldn't be too hard, since the top can be disassembled.  I would add side windows to the hardtop like the Australian Overlander hardtop - the Alaskan Postal doesn't have side windows.  Probably can get windows made to fit the stamped window opening in the inside steel panel of the hardtop from an RV supplier.  Also, since the World Cab hardtop had doors with square upper corners rather than the TJ door's round corners, a small gusset would also have to be fabricated to fill the corner so the door would seal properly.

I've drawn a mock-up: http://home.stny.rr.com/jscherb/tjscrambler.jpg

What do you think?  Can you think of any complications I haven't thought of?

Of course, I have to wait until Jeep builds an Unlimited with a 5-speed - don't want no stinkin' automatic :-).  Anyone heard any word on 5-speeds in the Unlimited?

I don't think it would ever really look like a true Scrambler, not without some serious modifications, expecially to the interior.  Scramblers don't have the full length wheel wells like the Wranglers do.  If it were me, and If I was going for a Scrambler, I would gut out the rear floor and wells and use replacement Scrambler bed pans and wheel wells.  The added length probably could be had with the quater panels, but they would have to be doctored.. I think the body height dimensions are different, which also would seem to be a problem fitting the older top on the newer Wrangler..  That's why '97 and newer doors dont work on older Wranglers and CJs..  Sure it could be done, but It seems to me it would be quite the investment.

The drivetrain is Wrangler all the way.. just because the 5 speed isnt in it yet doesn't mean you couldnt put one in it robbed from a junk yard Wrangler.  It would be fairly easy since the firewall and dash layout is the same since '97, so the clutch assembly and all that would be almost bolt in.

Why do they compare the Unlimited to the Scrambler?  I see no real similarities...  when I see it I think CJ-6.

you will definitely have problems with the front of the windshield mount on the world cab meeting the TJ windshield.    TJ windshield frame is completely different and much more contoured than the YJ/CJ windshield frame.   As with most projects, anything is possible, just depends how good you are at fabrication and how much effort you want to put into it.

And don't forget to put a CJ tailgate onto it either.    I had a 97 TJ I stretched just between wheelbase 12" and then put a CJ tailgate on it.    Pretty close..   But, the CJ tailgate looks awesome on it.

I'll see if I can dig up some pictures.

Come on over and visit our discussion of the unlimited VS the ORIGINAL Scrambler.

yes, I have some ideas on how to mate the top of the windshield to the world cab top.  definitely not a direct fit there.

also, no plans to do a CJ tailgate, since with the world cab I have a full height swinging door with a big "Jeep" logo on it.
