I'm trying to get in touch with Hazel about his Shortstar/SM420 combo. I'm interested in mating a Shortstar to my SM465 so I can ditch the heavy 258 I have in my 1983 CJ7 now. So, if you don't mind, here are a few easy questions:
How did you adapt the 60* bellhousing pattern on the 'Star to the 90* pattern on the SM420? Use an adapter plate? It would be nice if I could use the bellhousing I snagged off the donor truck I got the SM465 from. It is beefy, and already accepts the larger input bearing retainer.
What did you use for a flywheel, clutch assembly, pilot bushing, etc? I bet that 'Star came in front of an automatic.
I can imagine that the wiring is a nightmare since you went from a computer controlled tranny to an old school unit. What did you do for a harness?
Since this is a transverse mounted engine, where do the exhaust manifolds dump? Can you use them?
How much does the Shortstar weigh? And what are it's dimensions: length, height, and width?
Where does it make peak power? I assume it's pretty high in the rpms, but then again I think I remember something about surprising amounts of torque from this engine...does it lug very well? Or does it stall easily when idling in the big rocks? My 258 is pretty damn hard to kill, I am 112:1 and also added 16 lbs to the flywheel for an inertia ring. I really like being able to idle over/up anything I get traction on.
I guess I will stop there. Lemme know, and THANKS!
