98 TJ auto,  4.0, 106k mi. 2" procomp lift(springs), open diff, never wrecked or abused, new tires, just had Ft. end aligned.  Steering does not  pull and it goes perfectly straight down the road.  Irritating problem is that at any speed above about 30mph if I lift off the gas it dives slightly to right just enough to make me do a steering correction if I don't jump back on the gas.  There is no pull on the steering so I assumed that one end of the rear axle is moving forward or backwards depending on acceleration or deacceleration.  So I put tranny in "Park" w/no e-brake and phisically rocked the jeep back and forth to see if any of the rear locating link bushings have too much travel (not sure what too much would be).  Also watched rear tires while nailing gas in driveway in both forward and reverse.  Can't "see" any detectable movement for or aft.  No clunking sounds etc.  Now what can I check......this is my first Jeep so not sure if it's the nature of the beast.  Thanks in advance for any help.

i've got a '97 sport with quite a few miles on it.  i 'think' it could be your front swaybar links.  you could try disconnecting them and taking it around the block.

when my links wore out ... it felt like the whole jeep shifted side to side at times.

the rear suspension consists of 5 links with some sort of bushing on both ends of all 5. could be 1 is completly shot or several are a litttle sloppy. could also be a cracked but not busted clean off mounting tab somewere.

just pushing on it probable wont show much, your not strong enough, and cant notice how little it would take to throw the stearing off slightly.

you need to unload the suspension by jacking up in the air by the frame, and inspect each joint.

Thanks,  I'll do that tommorro and see if I can find anything loose/worn out.  Woud have done it today but I got my eyes dilated at the eye Dr.'s today and I can barely see the computer screen much less the keyboard.

that improved low light sight might have come in handy under the jeep

Well, with better vision today I got under the rear of the TJ and with both the suspension loaded and unloaded pryed every link and bushing around with big pry bars to see if any had more movemment than the others or were worn out.   I even disconnected one upper link that I suspected but it's bushing was fine.  Yes, I double checked that I had same diameter tires all around......I do.   Now i am going  to give up for awhile and maybe just live with it and pertend "it's a Jeep thing" and I am being too anal.   It's not like it wants to spin out when I back out of the gas ......  and it's really not noticealbe  in normal around town traffic,  just really straight, flat, smooth roads.  So, thanks again for the ideas of what to look for.  At least I fixed the door hinge strap so I got something done!
