My wife's 99 TJ 4.0 3speed auto trans is starting to slip. She just told me that it slips in the morning in first gear and on the way to work (20 miles) it won't shift gears till you let up on the throttle or it stays like that till it red lines the motor, then it will shift. I'm wondering if its the torque converter.

I'm thinking that if the trans needs to be rebuilt that I might as well look at upgrading it. Does anyone know of a better trans that I can swap in without a pricey adapter?

If your lucky it could be something as simple as fluid to low, filter plugged or a bad modulator.  The bands are adjustable in this transmission and I "think" the book says every 30k mi.  I just did mine on my '98.......no bid deal if the skid plate is off,  otherwise you need a special extension for one of the bands.   Good luck.....hope you don't have to see the AAmco man.

I've changed the fluid and filter every 30,000 miles ( it has 98,000 right now). I just got the factory service manual in the mail yesterday and from what I read so far is it might be the front band. Looks like when I get a break in the weather I'll be dropping the skid plate and adjusting both bands (since I'm there I might as well do both).

You also need a "inch pound torque wrench" instead of the usual foot pound wrench to adjust bands.  Be sure to watch for the different torque specs if you DON"T use the special extension.  Manual should give both amounts.

Front band with-out extension is 72 inch pounds. Right?

Thats what my book said too...........and it wasn't a "factory" manual.  If I remember right I used all 1/4" drive ratchet etc.  I just installed a deep Rock Ready trans pan and had to drop that skid pan again to do it.  I also put a trans temp sending unit in the pan thru the side where it is "just" protected  by the pan.  Cool pan, perfect fit and even came with a new filter and gasket and has a drain plug which will be nice for future use.

Every time I change the fluid I plan on Installing a drain plug in the pan, but when I get the fluid and filter I always forget to pick one up. Maybe this time I'll actually get one
