solenoid circuit malfunction?

I have a 96 cherokee, 4.0, auto. I replaced the jeep gas cap w/ an after market one and have had a check engine light coming on for a "solenoid circuit malfunction" there is a soleniod under the hood that has been ticking it seems to have something to do with evap, or gas tank pressure (???? not really sure) has anyone else had this prob, if so let me know what to do. my gas mileage has gone down alot also, Ive been using the old 4x4 cause its winter in NY, but that shouldnt put me down to 200 miles to the tank should it? thanks if ya can help
