hi all. i recently bought an 89 yj for 100$ from a buddy at work when my bronco died. at first it was just till the ford was fixed but now i've got the jeeper bug. it has the carb'd 258 and what sounds like a wicked bearing knock. but it doesn't make noise all the time and it does'nt really affect power that i can notice. any of you ever dealt with this before. i'd really like to keep the 258 and do a 4.0 head swap on it but i have a 4.3 thats all worked up that i could put in if i had to,(but i really don't want to). any help would really rock ass. thanks and happy holidays.

wow 100 that's a good deal. any pics of it? is it all stock? What plans do you have for it? As for engines if your looking for big power just do a chevy v8 swap, this seems to be the most popular. If it was me I'd have the stock engine rebuilt then add a fuel injection kit to it. Some headers, catback exhaust etc.

hey since you mention v8 what would it take to put a 350 up to a t-18

sorry did not mean to jump in and on diff. subject

not that i'm anyone to give advice but only giving a 100$ for the jeep leaves you with some extra $ you could throw at the 6 - like 96 zj says (i want one to) a fuel inj kit would be sweet----but then again a v8 would be sweet to!

but since you've got the 6 and your already set up for it you could do alot to it and still be dependable

well its all stock except the 265-75-15's i put on and i'm an audiophile so its got a really decent system. i'll try to get some pics up this weekend. it was a really good deal but the frame has a little rot in what i believe to be a common place from wht i read and the body needs some tlc.i want to rebuild the 258 with a 4.0 head and holley carb, crane cam, banks exhaust. i was thinkining of a rubicon express 4" lift with 1 1/4" shackles,(maybe a teraflex revolver system) and 1 or 2" body lift. not sure if i want 33's or 35's. the bronco i'm driving right now so i can fix up the jeep has 35's on it and i don't know if i'd like 35's on the jeep. but i'm sure they'll end up on there anyway you know how that goes. i want to keep the dana 30 and 35 so i'm trying to find out as much as i can about upgrading thier internals.probably gonna sell the 4.3 cause i want to keep my jeep all jeep. don't mean to write so much but boy when i get talking about the jeep i'm like a schoolgirl with a cell phone.any tips you guys have let me know

i have a 85 cj-7 with the 258 its got a offy 4bbl intake 350 holley 4bbl- small cam- dual er split headers - bored 30 over- um its got the single serpentine belt (converted from what i gather?) seems like its got plenty of power/torque

t-18 four spd w/dana20 transfer- i have a post up now askin bout changing it out to a 300?

i'm running a 4" spring under with 2" shackles right now i've got 4.10's in the axles and with 35"x 15.50 swampers it seems a bit too high so i'm looking at going lower . the 4.10 seems to be okay with 33"s but it looks silly - so i'm tryin to stay with the 35s

my rear is a dana 44 - its supposed to be okay with 35s the front is a different story - i'm not sure what axle it is- the guy i bought it from said it was a dana35c - people here said it was probably a 30(decent axle)- and that a 35 is no good for 35s

man i have no idea if i helped at all but my fingers are tired and my pen ran out of ink

I think you got mixed up with the front axle. A D35(usally in the rear) is stronger than a D30(usally in front). and not really(ether one) recomended for anything over a 32 or 33 tire if you wheel it. Most real wheelers will drop a D44 or better in the front as well.

the Rube dana44 isn't any stonger than a D30 with the exception of the gears themselves. the tubes are the same

I have never heard that before.......? Then why is it that ppl say that it's #### and replace it with the D44 or better? I never heard of anyone doing real hard wheeling with a d30 front before........can you get a upgrade kit for them like the D35 kits?

If you look here under," General Discussion - Idle Knocking" I just did the whole song and dance about the "sometimes it knocks" thing and the problem witn the wrist pins & pistons in the 4.2 (258cid) and the frist few years of the 4.0. You have a manual trans, the thrust bearing may be worn, letting the crank shaft walk back and forth. Any change in the knock when you press the cluch in? It may not stop, but you may hear a change in pitch when you press it. Check it out.

i was checking that out,(idle knockening), thanks. some one i know thinks it might be a cam bearing. so i'm on to more small little fixes cause i'm do for an inspection. so i need to come up with 4 wheel adapters so i can put my wheels and tires from my #### bronco on it. they are 4 15x10 American Racing baja wheels with 35x12.50.15 BFG Mud Terrains. put em' on the bronco after spendin 1600$ and every time i tried running it i'd get about a month out of it damn tires still have the little hairs on em. so i'm gonna do the spring over and put on a 2" body lift.
