hey i know i want to put rockwells under my cj - what do i do now!!!

every rig i see with rockwells has a v8 in it!  can i not run my straight six- isn't the gearing low enough  to allow me to keep my six and yet with tall tires enable me to reach somewhat decent speeds?

i guess i am iger-rant, just asking for some advice, what problems do you think i would encounter?

 thanks for any advice!!

yes you can.
the I6 is longer than most V8s
I imagine you could find lighter axles than rockwells that wouldn't break.
I'm thinking there is only 1 gear ratio for the rockwells, maybe 6.17

i think it actually has 6.72 -  i believe thats right?

do you think it could actually be able to get up to some highway speeds( if i wanted to drive it on the road every once and a while ?)

i dunno what size tires i would have to go with- i have heard that there are plenty of cj's out there with rockwells but i can't seem to find anyone that i could ask how and what they did and what they liked and didn't like.

i may find that it may be alil more than i want to get into like redoing the frame and so on, it just seems like i could use my springs/ shaft mods/ plumb brakes and be done-sure would hate to buy the axles and then not be able to use them!

thank you for the reply!!!

rear axle right now i have a dana 44 (from a scout) with disc/conversion - 4.10 gears with detroit true trac ( not happy at all with the locker)

front is a 35c same gear same locker

4" springs(spring under)  2" shackles 1" body  dropped pitman

35x15.50x15 superswampers  and  then got some 33x12.50's but still the thing drives horrible on the road and i have no idea where or why its so bad!  seems like everybody else is enjoying there lifted jeep on/off the road!

seems like the 44 is a good axle , not sure bout the 35c --- other than liking the thought of big- thought i could start over with rockwells maybe i'm grabbing at straws- should learn to fix what i got?

I dont think the 35c was ever sed in he front, you've probably got a 30, the standard jeep axle since 72.

the trutrac is not a very hard core wheeling diff for a rear axle. a regular locker is quite a bit cheaper than new axles. you should be safe to 35s with those.

if your planning to go to realy big, the rockwells have one big advantage over say 1 ton stuff, a much higher pinion.

the guy i bought the jeep from told me it was a 35c and supposedly the "c" stood for custom. I haven't a clue how to tell them apart and if it is a 30 you think it will be okay with 35's

is there a 35c seems like i've seen it in a mag before-if there is do you know anything about it?

i don't guess i need to worry bout it till it breaks i'm missin out on wheelin now cause the starter ring gear has a bad spot and it sounds horrible starting (t-18 behind the 258) and the trans jumps out of fourth unless you sit there and hold it (tightly) in gear! other than that it drives horrible on the road so i've got to figure that out as well------meanwhile i'm missing out on trails/hills and mud---aaaaggggghhhhhhhh
