You will need to fabricate new engin trans and transfer case mount's. Make sure that you have enough room between the fire wall and distributer so you can remove it without removing the engin. You will need to install a trans cooler and a radiator sized to the engin. Of corse you will need new drive lines or retube the ones that you have. Change the u-joints wile you are at it. You may have to relocate the battery.

I do not know the differences between your 85 and my 92, but I have successfully Frankensteined a 305 and turbo 400 into my XJ. The battery is fine where it was, the rear tranny crossmember was in perfect position, and fabricating a crossmember for the motor mounts was a breeze. I took the rig to a local shop for the electrical because I just did not want to decipher all the wiring diagrams. I lost the computer (big deal), cruise control, antilock brakes, and a/c (until I decide to fab a bracket for the compressor). That will probably come within a month of our first warm front in spring. The biggest problem I have encountered is hood clearance. I am surfing the web tonight in search of a hood scoop to make room for the air cleaner on my new carburetor.

sorry i didn't catch your questions earlier. i have not been very thorough in my visits to the site.

no, i did not neet the computer. i installed a reman carb and used the stock trottle cable and the cable bracket from the donor 84 firebird. the motor runs fine, but is just a temp until i can find a 350 to build and put in it's place. the two motors are intercangeable in almost every way. at current, i am running a sedate 31 inch tire on stock rims. the plan is to go big after the motor swap. i do recommend you reconsider your choice in tranny. a standard tranny will require a clutch conversion, but an automatic only needs a shifter cable (i modified my stock cable and re-routed it to operate the tranny shift arm) and a cheap tranny cooler. cooler lines are a snap! i have posted on the forum under the title "axle id and xj build" check it out.
