I am rebuilding a 85 CJ-7. It had a 4 cyl. engine in it. I have a good 304 engine to use. Problem is the tranny is a T-4 which I here is too weak to run.The transfer is a Dana 300 which I have been told is fine. Question is what tranny to use and what other problems am I going to have, adaptors, bellhousing, cluch linkage?
Thanks for any help-Mark

I'm not sure what your preference is, manual or auto. I've got a 77 CJ 7 fitted with a 304, mated to a TH400 automatic that bolts up to a D300. Very nice combo. Crawl ratio ain't much to write home about but for a dual purpose jeep it drives good on and off road. My CJ has a Novak adapter to make the tranny work. Look into it if you're interested in an auto tranny.

I have an '86 CJ-7. It originally had a 151 ci four cyl and the *** I swapped these out for an AMC 360 and an NV4500. With the correct adaptors it fits real nice with the Dana 300. It needed new motor mounts and the rear drive shaft had to be shortened. I had a hydrolic clutch that I swapped out for manual linkage(easier to fix on the trail). I also needed a new bell housing. The guys at Advanced Adaptors were alot of help. You will need a new radiator and engine wiring harness. Also was your 304 mated to an auto or a manual? You can go from an auto to manual but not manual to auto without engine mods. Do you have the donor vehicle? Because there are alot of other misc. items that you are going to need i.e. starter, alternater... Four Wheel Hardware has most of these things if you don't.
