I have a Clifford intake and a Holley 8007 390cfm carb on my just purchased 1980 CJ-5 6cyl 258, I want to set the carb up for offroad, I will be putting springloaded needle and seats in the carb and a Holley extended vent tube, anyone had any experiance with either side hung or center hung float boals? which is best for offroad? also my adapter plate will allow me to mount the carb either front to back or sideways anybody have any suggestions on the best mounting position for offroad use.

Thanks

Mark

I've done that set up on my CJ-7, 1983, and ran it for the last 14 years.  Also, did the same thing on the previous 3 CJ-7s before this one back to 1981.

Here's what I did with great results with the Holley 390 CFM 4 barrel on my 258 6:

1. Center hung float
2. Holley off road kit
3. Mounted backward (throttle linkage on outside-fenderwall side, drivers side)
4. No PVC (Montana legal)
5. Manual vacuum advance tube-hose to manual points and condersor distr.
6. Manual dash mounted hand throttle
7. 3/8" thick poly-styrene mounted spacer for the Clifford intake-to Holley carb. base.

Superb on and off road performance, always.  The auto choke works perfect also.

Hope that helps.

ok Robert I have a few questions

I have a side hung float, I need the holley kit to convert to center hung, where did you get your kit? Jeggs wants $175 for the kit not cheap

what is in a Holley offroad kit?

it sounds like the linkage is set up like it would be on a V8 with the fuel bowl facing the radiator correct???

why no PVC??? did you mean PCV valve= positive crankcase ventalation

I have electronic ignition, no points

also did you put the spacer in between the carb and adapter plate or is your spacer being used as a adapter plate? also brand name of spacer or did you make it??

MARK: ok Robert I have a few questions.

ROBERT:This BBS's format is weird.  Answered your inquiry this way below, to make it easier for both to know what we are asking and answering.  Hope this is okay.

MARK: I have a side hung float, I need the holley kit to convert to center hung, where did you get your kit? Jeggs wants $175 for the kit not cheap

what is in a Holley offroad kit?

ROBERT: Holley has/had an off road kit for thier most used off road carbs and it is a whole unit.  mine was about $39. It replaced everything, even a more condusive float for off road application.  It went in easily and changed everything for off camber, climbing,  and descending and makes the 390 almost like an efi set up.  I love mine.  check wth holley as they are selling direct on this I believe nd can steer you to the right kit.

MARK:it sounds like the linkage is set up like it would be on a V8 with the fuel bowl facing the radiator correct???

ROBERT: Yes, you are correct, the fuel bowl is forward, facing the radiator.

MARK:why no PVC??? did you mean PCV valve= positive crankcase ventalation

ROBERT:  Yes, no PVC set up.  Just a cap. Because I went with the Clifford new cast steel valve cover (and it is super--makes for the first time since running the inline 6, since 1972, for finally having a clean, dry oil free engine!!!), had the old style vent at the valve cover cap for engine crankcase vent, and not the rebreather hose to the carb body.  I chose the old way for mine since I didn't want the PVC nonsense.

MARK: I have electronic ignition, no points

ROBERT: Fine. You'll not need the vacuum line and that is capped off at the carb body when you install it.

MARK: also did you put the spacer in between the carb and adapter plate or is your spacer being used as a adapter plate? also brand name of spacer or did you make it??

ROBERT: I made mine out of Poly Styrene, and it is between the carb body,  and the provided spacer on the Clifford Intake Manifold. I wanted more carb lift from the intake throat for better fuel atomization time before entry.  Works really nice but is not required.

The only addon for me were the Clifford intake, headers,  and now,  I am getting ready to go with the new Clifford head.

No, but I'll get in my file on VEX,  my 1983 CJ-7, as mentioned.  Check it out here:

.......while I get the kit number.  I'm sure that Desert Rat Offroad carries it, but will check and post back here.  Holley's site is pretty involved and going there now, I couldn't find it either.
