i have a 76 cj and a 96 xj. i love them both. i like the cj because the top comes off, i can(and have) modify anything on it fairly easily and cheap. it's easy to fit 33's, 35's. it's somewhat unique in the sense that most people are wheeling later model jeeps these days. there's less sheetmetal to damage(i've rolled mine on it's lid and just put a small dent in the hood).
i like the xj because of the fuel injection, modern creature comforts(heat and ac, stereo), the ride quality seems to be better, you can fit more gear, and the newer xj will probably be more dependable.
both of your choices are good trail rigs but i prefer the cj. if you're building a trail rig/weekend warrior the cj is the way to go. it will most likely require more maint. because of it's age. if you're building for the trails, and to drive back and forth to work, the xj will probably be more dependable and comforable. just keep in mind the potential for body damage off road. a cj will be easier to keep it looking nice.(if that matters). body panels are cheap and easy to find. most of the sheetmetal is flat and easy to work with, and you don't really have to worry about door jambs/hinges not lining up and opening and closing right.

How about a TJ ? Is a new Jeep a possibility? The new unlimited has the best of both worlds,(XJ & CJ) longer wheel base, more leg room for the back seats and twice the cargo space of the standard TJ and removable top! If I had only known it was coming I would have waited another year to get mine. I use it on the trails all the time too ,even though it is new. Lots of used TJs are for sale also. The TJ has the four link coil suspension, yes!!!!? Happy Trails,TJMAK
