I'm thinking the CRD may be a I5 or I4.

IFS works for the HMMVS you just need something built for the purpose. my big fault with IFS is the compound angles at the outer joint limit turning radius in many cases.

IFS can be strong and even simple, it just rarely is

liberty diesel is a 2.8L 4cyl turbodiesel.  seems to get good reviews ... i think it's rated to tow 5000lbs.

quote from a reviewer:

With almost 300 lb-ft of torque (and 160 hp) the CRD has enough muscle to propel the Liberty around with no fuss and little apparent exertion.

It's not just the IFS that limits the libby.  The drive line is comprised of very light duty construction.  It has a tendency to come apart under off road conditions.  The libby was engineered from the start to be a street warrior and provide some scenic trail riding capability but NOT serious 4X4 abuse.  Watch the video in the link to see how the light weight aluminum front differential housing holds up.  Trail rated can mean different things things to different people.

My wife wheels her 03 libby renegade but she is into scenic forest service roads and mild two track trails and not the off camber trails that slam the roofline into the trees or the rocks that set you back on your spare tire.

yes turbo 4 cyl,  benz motor, made by motori benz of italy, as I posted b-4, cannot wait for them to be available @ junkyards, or new crate motor. when my rubi is paid off, i will swap!!    Yes, you can run biodiesel, a friend of mine runs straight refined vegetable oil in his vw @ 2.10 a gallon. he buys it a truckload @ a time in 55 gallon barrells/  And you can switch back and forth from veggies, to dinosaurs, without any conversions.  later

so if the liberty replaced the cherokee why doesn't some one research swapping a beefed up high pinion dana 30 like the one they built in this months issue. can't be that hard all those s-10 nuts are doing it. then you can keep that little diesel that rocks.then you could cobble together some sort of lift with some slight fender trimming and put 33's on it and have a decent little trail blaster. alls it takes is a little creativity. maybe i don't know enough about jeeps and am just babbling but all that old school hot rodding my dad taught me growing up says if it ain't availble or is to expensive figure out how to do it your self and do it yourself. plus the wow factor of being the first to swap a solid axle into one would be pretty cool. think out side the box!!!

It's not a Benz motor. The Liberty CRD is a turbo inline-four made by VM Motori. The company is in Italy and partially owned by DaimlerChrysler and Penske. The Benz diesel is a 3.0L V-6 that can be found in the overseas Grand Cherokee among other vehicles.

I didn't know the grand came with a diesel? You know gas is 99.9 here and diesel is like 105.9 so much for being cheaper.

ah, but look at how many miles you get out of a tank.  still cheaper to run (but definately not cheaper to buy any vehicle with a diesel engine compared to gas).

only in europe anyway.
