Yes, I have another winch question. What y'alls opinion on the Warn's Tabor series? Also, would a Warn Works 4700 winch be a good trail winch? Will it even mount on my Jeep's front bumper?

I have a 00' Sahara and I have the Warn XD9000i and I believe that this winch is far superior to the smaller Warn's mentioned in both the previous message's. The correct way to choosing the right winch is to know the gross weight of your vehicle loaded with yourself and whatever cargo you carry along on a weekend of jeeping and multipy that by 1 1/2 and that is the very least poundage of winch to have on your vehicle.

Hey thanks guys, and while I would agree they are both great winches, there is one small problem, price. I can't afford to drop $700 on a winch.

There is also the Magnum 9000 lb. winch that is put out by Warn. It is basically the same thing a the XD9000i except it does not have an intermal control module. This is a great winch @ almost 1/2 the price of the other 2 mentioned. Hope you find one to suite your needs.

You can park your Jeep in a lake if you want & you can bet your Warn will pull you out.

HAHA, yea I know my dad has a winch on our truck that is older than I am and the only prob with it is is that they make 'em with more power now. However, while it is prob only considered ATV strength by today's standards, it was enough to lift his CJ7 with the 304. The only prob is he wont give it to me. So for now i'm waitin til I have enough money for a Warn 6k. The thing I find amusing is they only come with a 1 year warranty, regardless of warranty length I know it will last forever. It isn't for no reason Warn is more expensive than the rest.

I run a Warn 8274 (purchased in 1968, I used it on another Jeep and installed it on my new 1972 Jeep when I purchased it) I would not use anything else. The speed is awesome and the offroad operation has never let me down on any of my Jeeps! Semper Fi, Gunner

Boy did you open up a can of worms.

I say a hydraulic winch in every application.  It runs off  your power steering pump only when needed.

http://www.milemarker.com/ (great photo of the military removing every WARN electric winch and replacing with hydraulic Mile Marker)
http://www.winchtest.com

An electric winch CAN NOT be run but for very short durations before you will completely drain the battery even with an upgraded alternator and dual batteries and the vehicle running at higher than idle.

An electric winch, even the Hi-zoot MOSFET stuff, overheat very quickly and can burn out.

A jeep with a hydraulic winch can quite literally winch continuously.  With a hydraulic winch you also have the very important factor of weight savings in that they are usually half the weight of an electric.  An electric winch is effectively a self contained unit, whereas a hydraulic winch is using your engine and power steering pump as the winch motor and is merely the spool. Much lighter front end keeping the handling and balance of the jeep.

Winches are probably the most misunderstood aftermarket product.  There is alot of brand loyalty that clouds the debate.

The quickest and easiest way to learn (without the hard way) is to ask a friend who has a Warn, Superwinch, Ramsey, or el cheapo to take you out so you can see their winch in action.  First of all most people will hesitate right there, for good reason.  Anyway once out on the trail find a pretty severe free rolling slope of some decent length.  Winch the Jeep.  Do it again.  Have them demonstrate a controlled descent with the winch (think rapelling with your Jeep).  If you do this test at night you'll find out one thing in a hurry, you don't want an electric winch.

The U.S. military actually took the time and expense to remove the big Warn electric winches that were on Hummers. Keep in mind they take winching seriously as they all have Pull-pal land anchors to winch from in the desert.  Even the monster 24V warn winches built to military spec were completely unreliable, the motors and solenoids would fry under use, and when you are getting shot at you can't wait for the motor to cool down for twenty mintutes after every 50ft. of pull.

Warn has brand loyalty similar to Jeep, but I'll take the analogy further, how much loyalty can you have to a Jeep with a Dana 35 stock?

Son, I have no idea where you came from, but you should go back there & stay there. I run a tow truck business for a living. My rollback has a single Ramsey & my winch truck has dual Ramsey's. Both trucks have PTO winches & in all reality THEY SUCK. As for a stock 35 If thats what you run you better stay on the porch & watch the big dog's play because that's where you belong. When you need a lesson on anything related to the sport (or should I say way of life) of off-roading just give me a shout & I will be glad to open up school.

So Ramseys SUCK. What do you recommend? And for the guy who said about the winches on hummers, well, hummers SUCK too. They need those huge-ass winches because hummers get stuck alot and they weigh a ton so you can't get 'em out. As for the Dana35 I'm gonna run it til it breaks.
