My teenage son thought it would be a good idea to pull someone out of a ditch. Very commendable, however, I have no rear bumper, so he hooked up to the area right where the shackle connects to the cross-member, and of course it ripped the thin steel like a piece of paper. I had it welded back in place, however, that corner now dips about 1.5" lower then the other side, and it really bugs me.
Question: Can anyone suggest a very cheap way of lifting that corner back up?

Bummer. But it's a pretty common problem with the old CJs. The frames are not what anyone would consider heavy-duty and most are bent in some way causing the problems you're having.

Sanity check please, do you think adding some sort of additional 1.5" spacer to the area above where the leaf spring mounting plate bolts into the frame would help level it out? I would think something like this would lift the body enough, agree, yes - no?

Yeah, it could work, but it's kind of a coverup and it will certainly create more leverage on the already-weak CJ mounts and frame.
You sure it's not just a bent spring though?

The spring looks fine, I can pretty much see where the weld is crooked / off enough to cause the dip. Do you know of anywhere I could buy a new stronger cross member or whatever they are called, ya know it's that single piece that covers the width of the Jeep, sits behind the bumper?
Also, just out of curiosity, when you remove the spring mount that bolts onto the frame, are the nut(s), which are on the inside of the frame welded in place, so one doesn't have to get creative to reinstall the bolts?
Thanks

If you are looking for the stock rear crossmember you can get one HERE.
Yes, the nuts are captured. But sometimes they are rusty so soak them in lubricant long before you try to loosen them.
