Anybody know the best tranny fluid to use with a '82 Borg Warner T-5 in a Scrambler.  The fluid recommended in the manual is not available anymore (Dexron 2 Auto tranny fluid.) I put in Dexron 3 auto tranny fluid and the performance has suffered. i.e. it wont shift into 5th any more without 6-8 throws and hitting it just right. 1st and 2nd are rough but to shift into but not bad if you have the rpm's right. The tranny was rebuilt 12,000 mi. ago. I don't know what the previous owner used but it worked fine until i changed the fluid for the first time. Thanks for any ideas.

the dextron 3 recommended fluid is for a late 80's early 90's mustang t-5 world class transmission, which has slightly different bearings and servos that are built to work with the thinner fluid. the old cj t-5 needs a thicker oil for it to function correctly. i've found 80w works great in hotter regions(it's the required oil for the model year t-5 your using), or for colder regions a 50/50 mix of 15w40 and 80w. the 15w40 is a diesel oil, but it has the additives that work well with your servos and roller bearings. it also keeps the 80w from becoming too thick when temps drop below 0 degrees.

According to Chilton, the T4 and T5 uses Dexron 2.
I used Dexron 3 in mine and it shifted much better, but that could have been because it had heavy water contamination.
