I've got an 1961 CJ5, with the Buick V6 inside it, I THINK the stock tranny. I have a Ford 302, thinking of doing an engine swap on it.
the PROBLEM is that I'm a recently converted hot rod guy.. I have my mustang and my corvette, so my room mates have convinced me to try four wheeling. I AM mechanically inclined, and able to handle most of the work, what I DON'T know is where the HELL to find some parts that I need. I want to slap a 302 inside it, with a NP435 4-speed. I'm debating on keeping the 4wd, or slapping a hollow front end, and going 2WD... However that's just me talking. I have a list of stuff to do to it, I'm just at my wits end trying to find PARTS for the damned thing. I need motor mounts for a 302, or how to make them, front drive axles, that sort of thing. is there a place i can find these sort of things, one of y'all that have done that engine swap maybe have some advice? and before I get berated for not choosing a Chevy engine,I happen to HAVE a ford engine, really no other reason. Any Advice?

Why would you want to go to 2WD with a Jeep? I understand that you're a hotrod car guy but wanting to take away the role that the Jeep was designed for is almost like spitting in the face of every Jeep owner out there. That's just my opinion on that issue. Now if you do the right thing and keep the front axle, you will have to get a rear sump oil pan for the Ford motor because the stock is front sump which interferes with the axle housing itself.

I have this same dilemma also.  I critsized JP for running a feature on a 2wd CJ with 1000HP and a dune buggy with a TJ body skin on top.  I thoiugh those were hideous examples of jeep, actually I think they were not jeeps at all.  To maintain an identity as a Jeep does it need to be 4wd or does it need to be on the original Frame at least?

I have a cj3b That looks really good, partially restored to look military with NDT tires and all with new canvas top.  But , now that I dont want to plow with it anymore, I dont have much use for the 4wd.  I cant go where most jeep clubs go with big lifted jeeps, and the vintage clubs are far away from me.  I am a HOT ROD guy at heart also, so I may throw in my 350, 4 speed and AMC 20 rear axle.(narrow for early cjs).  I am going back and forth on this.  I dont want to lift it because it looks so good as a stock military jeep, big gonky tires would make it look less authentic and interesting.  So I will leave everything stock outwardly and change the drivetrain, leaving stock front end in.  I also thought of adding the new boltin front disc brake kit someone is selling online for $550.
