How to check a TJ before I buy it?

I'm looking at used TJ's and I'd like some advice about what to look out for and how to check the drive line before I buy. I've read the frame is the #1 thing to check,followed by the transfer case and differential gears and so on. Whats the best way to check these areas for damage so I don't buy into a poorly maintenanced or serious problem jeep.
Also did the TJ at any time come with Dana 44 rearends, or did Jeep still put 35's in? How to tell?

the TJs came with the dana 35 in the rear i believe. and the 30 up front. check the oil pan for rust. i know the cherokees rusted in this spot and if its the same motor its possible that the TJs did this too. as for checking the driveline and such, test driving it should give you a good idea. listen for noises binding and so on. if it from a dealer than ask for car fax. check the body lines to see that they all line up. as for identifying, there is a tag on the axle i think. you could google "axle identification" or one of the more experienced on this site. good luck.

you can get a tj with a factory 44 rear, its cover is kinda stop sign shaped as the dana 35 is more oval. look for dents and gouges in the skid plate on the gas tank and belly pan. if it a manual year 00-04 i think it has a nv3550 tranny, it is noisy so a rattleing sound while in nuteral with the clutch out is normal, also they have a tendancy to grind in the back gears when cold. if it has high miles check the rear main for leaks.

Also check for play in any part of the steering linkages. And don't forget to put it in 4-hi and 4-lo. Only put it in 4 on loose surfaces or go in a straight line. Make sure it goes in and out of 4-hi/low easy and doesn't make any sounds while driving. Another person walking next to the Jeep while doing this in a parking lot helps.
