yj front axle questions

My son just became the proud owner of a yj.  Ok i have done lots of chevies and little to no jeep.  I think yj 92 4.0 5 speed 231 and 30/35.  could be wrong.  3"bl and 2" shackles.

On with the question after what i know

Front u-joints need replaced.  On lift remove tire. cotter pin and cap then nut.  Remove caliper steering where attached to knuckle the must i do both ball joints or can i do the lower one?  Then just slide the shaft out and change the u-joint.  Or is there more to it then this?  What about the vacuum disconnect?  Anything i must do to it?  Is there a way to put hubs on the front cheap or just a posi-lock cable to make sure it engages?  Any thoughts or links would be great.

Sorry have not searched much but the job is comming up quick and just want any thoughts that might make this easier on me.  Like odd tools since i will not get to do this in my yard but a shop near his home mostly set up for oil, brake and tires along with other minior repairs.

Thanks Ronnny

you should be able to unbolt the unibearing and not mess with the ball joints unless they need replaced

I only looked at the spindle one time when the wheel was off i guess i should see how it bolts in easy enough.  Anything about the axle disconnect other than sliding the axle out and back in that i should know?

What joints should this take?  It is a 92 yj.  I thought i read it took 260 ujoints and the part store gave him 297 joints.

It uses a 260 if it's stock. The larger U-joints were not used until 1996 models.

Ok appreciate the help.

Autozone could not find 260 u joints.  They came up with another number but measured out the same as a 260.  Better than the 297 they tried to sell at first.

Found this thread on removing bearing
http://www.nagca.com/grandtech/dana30wheelbearing.htm

And this on changing the joint
http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/axle/ujoint/

The axle shafts pulled right out and back in the housing very easy.  Just made a little tool to drag the dirt out of the axle tube so would be less likely to get any on the spines sliding the shaft back in the tube.  Another side note on the bearing removal is make sure the 13mm 12point is a shallow well socket for the top bolt at least.  Took about 3 hours to do both sides for me and my son.

Thanks for the help.  Will start a new question now.
