Hey has anybody ever tried anything like this? did they really help reduce the sound?
http://www.jegs.com/i/Car+Chemistry/176/3DI25R/10002/-1
right now I'm running open headers (SB chevy) with about 2 feet of 2.5 inch pipe that dumps out the side of the rust rod.... and it's really loud... it resonates in the houses next door every time I start the thing and mother is ready to send the jeep to the scrap yard!! so I need a cheap fix quick!
what else would help that is cheap?
thanks for any thoughts.....

I don't know about those, maybe just Mufflers. I mean I like loud exhaust too, (at the appropriate time) but pissed-off neighbors and breathing exhaust isn't cool. And what's really uncool is your own MOM getting P.O.ed! Buy mufflers and cutouts (or fab some) then uncork em on the strip and cork 'em driving home.
Just my thoughts.

yea I know about the whole muffler/cutout deal I'm looking for something cheaper, quicker, and easier..... just quite enough for the street.... i won't ever need to open em up for the strip or anything

Sorry, didn't know what you were putting them on when I first replied - Ratrods don't use mufflers...none of the ones I've seen "blap"ing around Bonneville had mufflers anyway.
okay, quieter for cheap - Whattabout building some "expansion chambers" - kinda like Glass-packs, without the guts...maybe this will allow some minute amount of muffling at low engine revs.
Or maybe use a cheapo, parts-store exhaust elbow (45* bend) and cut it in half (bisecting the angle) and using the two halves as turn-down tips, it will at least redirect the sound waves into the dirt...but maybe that's of negligible value...as I'm guessing the "Glass(less)-packs" might be.

I found these at Summit....

More expensive than the things you were looking at on Jegs, but maybe more effective and better flowing...I don't know. Never tried any of these really, except, the turn-downs, and they do knock my exhaust note down significantly, but since I run dual 2.5" pipe on my truck, with turbo mufflers and short pipes, I seem to notice a bit more "thrumming" resonance at idle than when the mufflers just oppened into atmosphere. I ran no pipe behind my mufflers. Now there is about 18" of pipe terminating at a turndown that resembles the shape of a bullet - very sleek.
