what dana axle do i have

i am in need of finding out what dana rear axle i have. it came out of a 96 grand cherokee (canadian issue).cover has dana 96-073 46590-1 .i need gears but dont know where to start.

does it have a metal plug in the diff cover? if so most likely a dana 44. if its a rubber plug its most likley a dana 35

it has a rubber plug, but its not a 44 or a 35 or a 60 nothing i find matches this cover

It's likely that it's the aluminum Dana 44. Not the same as a cast iron version. Many things are different about it including the gears. I think only 3.55 and 3.73 gears are available. HERE Is a little more about your axle. The diff cover may vary from the image though.

its not aluminum the cover is bigger than a 44 and smaller than a 60 . cover looks alot like a 44 but has flats on top and bottom not rounded.have pics but cant post

Sounds like the Chrysler 8.25 (or 8 and a 1/4) I have 2 xj's and both have it not to mention a third axel in the garage

Pretty sure it's the aluminum Dana 44. The cover looks different than a standard Dana 44 and it is a little bigger. Call around. Looks like THIS.
